Last school year was a banner year for CONNECTED life coaching, but things really exploded this year with over 500 students in our coaching program. As we expanded into new schools in the Sacramento area, we also began programs in Oakland and Lake County. Both of these areas are areas of huge need. Our program in Oakland is at a school that has experienced violence and constant turnover of teachers and administrators. With a Graduation rate of 65%, testing averages are 20% of state averages and a falling attendance, this is one of the most challenging schools in Oakland, but that’s exactly where we want to be.
In Lake county, the poverty rate is twice the national average and is last in public health with a death rate twice the state average. This year, our first in Lake County, over 250 students were involved in CONNECTED coaching and the results were almost instant. Teachers reported a rise in attendance, test scores and assignment quality within weeks. Coaching in Lake County will be the focus of a university study examining the effectiveness of StudentReach coaching and we are elated at the opportunity to see the verified results of we are doing.
Assemblies – We have been able to get to so many places this year. Modesto, Elk Grove, Sacramento, Clear Lake, Kentucky, San Diego, Napa County and more places than we can keep track of have been touched by assembly programs. Say Something (which focuses on sex trafficking prevention) and CONNECTED (which focuses on peer intervention strategies for suicide, drug addiction, and civility) really hit home with students and the impact is long term.
StudentReach now has 5 full-time staff members in Baja as we move into long-term projects to reach youth, assist families and care for orphans. We will soon complete the purchase of our land for our base and summer camp and we have already begun City View Hope Village where single mothers can keep their family together, get free housing and receive job training. This project is a huge leap of faith for us, but it has been exciting to see even the federal Government of Mexico take notice of our strategy to create long-term success for families and children.
A Day for Youth.
